Reefer Trailer Tracking Compared: Thermo King, Phillips Connect, Cooltrax, Samsara, ORBCOMM

Every reefer tracking system shows you where the trailer is and what the box reads. What separates them is whether you can change the setpoint from the office, and whether that works on the units you actually run. We read five vendors' own pages on 7 October 2026.

Reefer Trailer Tracking Compared: Thermo King, Phillips Connect, Cooltrax, Samsara, ORBCOMM

Every reefer tracking system on this list will show you a dot on a map and a temperature next to it. That part is solved. A rep who spends the demo on the map is selling you the commodity.

What actually separates these systems is two things a demo tends to skip. Can a dispatcher change the setpoint, clear an alarm or restart the unit from the office, or only watch it? And does that control work on the reefer units you already own, or only on one manufacturer's? A fleet with nothing but Thermo King units and a fleet running Thermo King and Carrier side by side should not be buying the same thing.

Quick answer: Thermo King, Cooltrax, Samsara and ORBCOMM all say on their own pages that you can change reefer settings remotely. Phillips Connect's pages describe temperature records and alerts, plus trailer health, and say nothing about remote control. On brands, Cooltrax, Samsara and ORBCOMM name both Thermo King and Carrier units; Thermo King's top tier, TracKing Pro, works on Thermo King units only. None of the five publishes a price.

What They Have in Common

Strip out the marketing and the common baseline across these systems is location and temperature visibility, with alerts and historical records widely available. Thermo King's ConnectedSuite page ticks GPS tracking, geofence alerts, temperature visibility and alarm notifications in all five of its service levels. Phillips Connect says its record "starts when the trailer is pre-cooled and continues through delivery." Samsara puts temperature data into proof of delivery documents.

So don't pay for the baseline twice. If your ELD or fleet platform already reports trailer position, the reefer system has to earn its money on the box. Our guide to fleet tracking software features covers the tractor side.

Three Questions That Split Them

Find out if you can change the setpoint, or only see it. Monitoring tells you a load is warming. Control lets you respond remotely when the problem can be corrected through the unit's controls. Samsara lists turning reefers on and off, changing run mode, clearing alarms and adjusting setpoints from its dashboard. ORBCOMM's PT 6100 datasheet lists changing the setpoint, the mode and the controlling sensor, clearing alarms and running a pre-trip. Cooltrax advertises "2-way reefer control". Thermo King includes remote settings in four of its five service levels, all but the entry Track & Trace tier.

Match the system to the units in your yard. This is where mixed fleets get caught. ORBCOMM's datasheet says the device works with "every type of refrigerated unit" and lists Carrier Vector, APX and Solara alongside Thermo King SR-series controllers. Cooltrax claims "all major reefer brands", naming Thermo King and Carrier. Samsara is compatible with both, but by different routes: a wired or API integration for Thermo King and an API integration for Carrier. Samsara's own page says the "dual licensing model may present challenges", so ask what you pay on the OEM side as well as Samsara's.

Decide where the data has to land. A reefer screen nobody opens is wasted. ORBCOMM names its integrations: Innovative Computing Corp, TMW, McLeod, Add On Systems, PeopleNet, SSI and Prophesy. Phillips Connect announced a McLeod integration in January 2026 for trailer health and location data. Cooltrax and Thermo King say they integrate with third-party systems but name no TMS partners on the pages we read.

System by System

Thermo King TracKing. If every unit you run is a Thermo King, the maker's own platform is the obvious first call. ConnectedSuite runs on a monthly subscription across five service levels, from basic Track & Trace up to a Remote Operating Center that Thermo King says watches units around the clock and predicts failures. The catch is in the footnotes: TracKing Pro is described as "proprietary" and collects data "from Thermo King reefers", and some features are marked as available on Precedent units only. Thermo King's pages don't say whether the core TracKing tier reads other brands. With Carrier units in the mix, get that answer in writing.

Phillips Connect. This is a trailer platform first and a reefer platform second. Its Smart7 nosebox reports location, ABS faults, light circuits and trailer health, and its cold chain pages promise a temperature history for every refrigerated trip, with frozen and chilled compartments tracked separately. It also says it can bring reefer unit data into Connect1 through integrations with "leading reefer manufacturers" without naming them. If brake and light problems cost you more than warm loads do, it belongs on the shortlist. If you need to move a setpoint from the office, get that confirmed in writing first, because its pages don't claim it.

Cooltrax Fresh InTransit. The cold chain specialist of the five. It sells real-time temperature, two-way control and brand coverage across Thermo King and Carrier, and it offers pallet probes that read the product itself. If your shippers care about the load's temperature as well as the box's, that is the feature to ask about.

Samsara. The case for Samsara is one dashboard. If your tractors already run Samsara's ELD, putting the reefers on the same screen saves a login and a vendor. Control is there for both Thermo King and Carrier. The cost is the dual licensing Samsara itself flags, and its pricing page is a quote form. Its TruckMyApps listing is the main Samsara entry, filed under Fleet Management.

ORBCOMM. ORBCOMM now sells its supply chain products under the VIACHAIN brand, and its reefer device is the PT 6100. On paper it is the broadest of the five: every unit type, the longest named list of TMS and in-cab integrations, cellular plus satellite, and a battery that ORBCOMM says keeps reporting for up to ten days without vehicle power. It also has the most reviews of the five in our directory. The "80% market share" line on its site comes with no source, so ignore it.

What FSMA Actually Asks a Reefer Carrier

Nearly every vendor here sells FSMA compliance. Samsara promises "FSMA-compliant records", Cooltrax says it "makes FSMA compliance easy". The Sanitary Transportation rule itself asks for less, and differently.

The rule puts the temperature in the shipper's hands: the shipper must specify the operating temperature to the carrier in writing (21 CFR 1.908(b)(2)). Under a written agreement that makes the carrier responsible for sanitary conditions, the carrier has to show it held that temperature "if requested" by the shipper or receiver, and it may do so "by any appropriate means agreeable to the carrier and shipper". The rule's own examples are ambient readings at loading and unloading, or time and temperature data from the trip (1.908(e)(2)). The retention rules in 1.912 cover written procedures, agreements and training records for 12 months. They set no retention period for each trip's temperature log. Businesses under $500,000 in average annual revenue, adjusted for inflation, are not covered at all.

None of that makes telematics pointless. A continuous log is the fastest way to answer a receiver who rejects a load and asks you to prove the box held temperature. But it is a tool for meeting the request, not a device the rule requires. What your shippers' contracts ask for decides how much of this you need.

FAQ

Can I change a reefer's setpoint from the office?

With four of the five systems here, yes, according to their own pages: Thermo King (all levels except Track & Trace), Cooltrax, Samsara and ORBCOMM. Phillips Connect's pages describe monitoring and alerts and don't state remote control.

Do reefer tracking systems work on both Thermo King and Carrier units?

Cooltrax, Samsara and ORBCOMM name both. Thermo King's Pro tier is limited to Thermo King units. Phillips Connect says it works with "leading reefer manufacturers" without naming them.

How much does reefer tracking cost?

None of the five publishes a price. Thermo King says its plans are a monthly subscription; Samsara's pricing page is a quote form. With Samsara on Carrier or Thermo King units, ask about the OEM side of the licence as well.

Does FSMA require a reefer temperature recorder?

Not as such. The rule requires adequate temperature control, and under a written agreement, a demonstration that you held the shipper's temperature if the shipper or receiver asks. A continuous log is one accepted way to provide it; readings at loading and unloading are another.

Where Each System Fits

All Thermo King and no plans to change: start with Thermo King's own platform and buy a level with remote settings, which rules out Track & Trace. Mixed Thermo King and Carrier: get quotes from ORBCOMM and Cooltrax, and from Samsara if your trucks already run its ELD, and make every rep put the OEM licence cost in writing. Trailer health over cargo temperature: Phillips Connect, after it confirms what it can and can't control on the unit.

Whatever you pick, trial it on a few trailers first. Set an alarm threshold, let it trip, and time how long it takes for the alert to reach someone who can act on it.
