The TruckMyApps directory lists 310 tools under Tracking and Visibility as of 15.09.2026. That number is not a shopping list, it is a warning. Three people inside the same operation ask for "a tracking app" and describe three different products, and a purchase made to satisfy all three at once tends to end up serving one of them.
Quick answer: dispatchers should buy for exceptions, not for a map they will stare at. For drivers, a second app starts at a disadvantage. The one already holding their loads and pay has a reason to stay open. Shippers want one forwardable link with an ETA on it and a name to call. If your trucks run ELDs you already own the position feed, and the missing piece is usually the customer-facing layer. Decide which of the three you are before the demo.
What Is a Freight Tracking App?
A freight tracking app is software that reports where a load is and when it will arrive, to somebody who is not standing next to it. Everything a vendor adds on top of it, geofences, dwell reports, temperature alerts, customer portals, exists to serve one of three audiences, and they want opposite things.
The position itself comes from a small number of sources: the ELD or telematics unit wired into the truck, an app on the driver's phone, a trailer or asset tracker, or a status message passed along by whoever is actually hauling it. Vendors differ far less on where the dot comes from than on what they do with it. That is where the buying decision lives.
Why Do Three People Ask for the Same App and Mean Different Things?
Because "where is the load" is a different question depending on what you have to do next. The dispatcher has to intervene. The driver has to keep driving with as little admin as possible. The shipper has to answer their own customer. One screen cannot be optimised for all three, and the tools split accordingly.

What Should a Dispatcher Check Before Buying?
Buy for exceptions, not for the map. A live map is the demo feature, and in most operations nobody has the time to sit and watch one. What earns its keep is the rule that fires when a truck sits at a shipper for three hours, misses a geofence, or stops moving with 400 miles left on a 500-mile run. Ask the vendor to show you the alert configuration screen, not the map.
Check the refresh interval and who pays for it. Position updates every fifteen minutes and position updates every two minutes are different products with different data costs, and vendors are not always loud about which one your plan includes. On short-haul regional freight the difference is invisible. On a long run into a tight delivery window it is the difference between a warning and an apology.
Ask what happens when the driver is not on your ELD. Brokered freight, owner-operators, partner carriers: the position for those loads has to come from somewhere else, usually a phone ping the driver has to accept or a status feed from the carrier's own system. Coverage on your own trucks tells you nothing about coverage on the freight you handed off. Get the vendor to describe that path in detail before you sign.
What Will Drivers Actually Use?
The one that already has their loads in it. This is the least negotiable constraint in the whole category and the one most often ignored during a purchase.
A driver's phone already carries the ELD app, probably a fuel card app, possibly a load board, and the company app where settlements show up. Adding a tracking app that only benefits the office puts it dead last in that list, and an app with no payback for the person holding the phone is the one that ends up signed out, force-quit or gone. When that happens the conclusion in the office is usually that drivers will not adopt technology, which is the wrong reading of a purchase the drivers were never part of.
If the tracking has to live in a separate app, the app needs a reason to be opened that pays the driver back: documents scanned once instead of twice, detention time recorded automatically, settlement visible without a phone call. If it has no such reason, put the tracking where the driver already goes and accept whatever that platform's tracking does.

What Does the Shipper Actually Want to See?
A link, an ETA and a name. That is the product.
The shipper is usually answering somebody else, a plant manager, a store, a customer of their own, and every minute they spend logging into your portal to find an answer is a minute they remember at renewal. The tools that win this side of the category are the ones that let a shipment status leave your system entirely: a public tracking page, a status email, or a feed into the shipper's own system so the answer appears where they already work.
Two things to test before you believe a demo. First, open the customer link on a phone with no account and no login, because that is how it will actually be used. Second, check what the page says when the data is stale. "Last updated 4 hours ago" builds more trust than a dot sitting confidently in the wrong place, and vendors handle that moment very differently.
Do You Already Have Tracking in Your ELD or TMS?
Often, yes, and this is where money gets wasted. The ELD in the truck is already reporting position on a schedule: while a vehicle is in motion the federal rule requires an intermediate log at least every hour, position included. Fleet tracking platforms already store it. A transportation management system already knows which load that truck is on. In most operations the position data is already there. What is missing is the step that turns it into an alert for the dispatcher or a link for the customer.
So before you shop, run one check: ask your current ELD or TMS vendor for two things, an exception alert on a load and a customer-facing status link. If both exist, the work ahead is configuration rather than a purchase. No. A truck management app covers the running of the operation, loads, drivers, documents, maintenance and often billing. A truck tracking app covers one function inside that, where the vehicle or the freight is. Most tracking is a feature of a bigger platform, which is why searching for the tracking app often lands you on a management platform instead.
What is a freight tracking app?
